Statutory Traffic Penalties & Demerit Points
Bahrain enforces a strict black points system and graduated penalties under Traffic Law No. 23 of 2014:
| Traffic Contravention | Statutory Fine Schedule | Points / Legal Sanction |
|---|---|---|
| Jumping a Red Light | BD 100 – BD 500 (Up to BD 1,000–3,000 if property damage occurs) |
Up to 7 Demerit Points; court referral potential |
| Exceeding Speed Limit (≤ 30% above limit) | BD 50 – BD 250 | Eligible for 50% early settlement reduction |
| Exceeding Speed Limit (> 30% above limit) | BD 100 – BD 500 | Points recorded; possible court escalation |
| Using a Handheld Mobile Phone While Driving | BD 50 – BD 500 | Direct judicial referral for severe repeat cases |
| Failure to Wear Seatbelt (Driver or Passenger) | BD 20 – BD 100 | Recorded on vehicle registry |
| Obstructing Traffic / Illegal Parking | BD 20 – BD 100 | Impoundment risk for blocked arteries |
Important Statutory Guidelines & Deadlines
- Early Settlement Reconciliation (50% Rule): Under Bahrain traffic regulations, a 50% discount applies to the minimum statutory fine for eligible reconcilable offenses if the citation is settled within 7 days of issuance.
- Vehicle Registration (Passing & Renewal Blocks): Outstanding fines logged against a vehicle or owner CPR must be fully settled before completing annual vehicle inspection (Passing), renewing vehicle registration (Mulkiya), or completing vehicle ownership transfers.
- Disputing Fines: If you believe a camera or radar citation was issued erroneously, you must lodge an official grievance through the National Suggestions & Complaints System (Tawasul) or visit the General Directorate of Traffic headquarters at Isa Town before payment, as settled fines cannot be refunded online.
Contraventions referred to the Traffic Court or Public Prosecution (such as aggravated reckless driving, excessive speeding causing damage, or DUI) cannot be settled through the standard online payment gateway until a judicial verdict or criminal order is formally entered into the MOI system.
